Doha Information
Location
Doha is the capital city of Qatar. With a population of 400,051 according to the 2005 census,[citation needed] it is located in the Ad Dawhah municipality on the Persian Gulf ( [show location on an interactive map] 25.3° N 51.5333° E). Doha is Qatar's largest city, with over 80% of the nation's population residing in Doha or its surrounding suburbs, and is the economic center of the country. Doha is home to the Education City, an area devoted to research and education.
Background Information
In 1850, the city of Doha was founded under the name Al-Bida. The name "Doha" came from the Arabic ad-dawha, "the big tree." The reference is to a prominent tree that must have stood at the site where the original fishing village arose, on the eastern coast of the Qatar peninsula. In 1882, al Rayyan built the Al Wajbah fortress, in southwestern Doha. The following year, Sheikh Qassim led a Qatari army to victory against the Ottomans.
The city was made capital of the British protectorate of Qatar in 1916, and when the nation gained independence in 1971, Doha remained the capital of Qatar. In 1917, the Al Kout fortress, which is located in the center of the city, was built by Sheikh Abdulla Bin Qassim Al-Thani. In 1949, oil exportation began in Qatar. Today the nation as a whole produces over 800 000 barrels of oil daily. In 1969, the Government House opened. Today it is considered to be Qatar's most prominent landmark.
In 1973 the University of Qatar opened, and in 1975 the Qatar National Museum opened in what was originally the ruler's palace in 1912. The Al Jazeera Arabic satellite television news channel began broadcasting in 1996, with headquarters and broadcast center in Doha. Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani currently rules in what some consider to be Qatar's most beautiful city.

GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR PRESENTERS
When you are preparing to present at the GCC-IUG conference, please keep the following objectives in mind:
- Be sure that your presentation is easy to understand for the entire audience,
- Communicate the main points of your presentation;
- Make the presentation interesting and valuable to the audience.
Here are some tips:
Structure of presentation
- Selection of Materials
The emphasis will be on the presentation of new results, techniques or interpretations; many conference papers are reports on work in progress, or on the completion of a major project such as that involved in carrying out research. The speaker has to select the key elements of the paper and present them in such a way that the audience feels they are getting the researcher's own interpretation. This might mean focusing on only one part of the data, or on a particular problem with the results.
- Title
Be sure that the title of your presentation is an accurate reflection of its content.
- Organization
Is the material well organized for your oral presentation? Does it flow smoothly from introduction to conclusion in a logical sequence? If slides are to be used, are they easy to read and follow and are they suitably placed in the presentation? Logical organization is the single most important element of all successful presentations. Your time is limited; therefore, make every word count. Plan your presentation carefully. Avoid generalized, meaningless conclusions.
- Focus on content
Focus only on the most important information that you want to convey. Decide on a small number of key issues (ones that are controversial, often overlooked, or represent the latest developments in the area) and concentrate on those. Focus on the new issues and the latest developments.
- Stick to your topic
Eliminate material that does not support the main thrust of your message. Continually remind your audience how your remarks relate to your main message or purpose. This will also help to keep you honest.
- Timing
The audience will have the conference proceedings in front of them, so they are not going to want to have the paper read to them verbatim - even if that were possible in the limited time available. You cannot read 5000 words aloud in twenty minutes and have any chance of these being understood.
- Visual Aids
Carefully consider how many graphs etc should be included in the presentation. They are worthless if they are not of good quality and legible.
Keys to a Successful Presentation:
- Look pleasantly confident, and show your willingness to share new information.
- Do not read your paper or slides to the audience.
- Give the audience a moment to understand each slide before continuing.
- Speak to your slide sequence.
- Use the microphone properly. If you are not sure you are being heard, check with your organizer. Lapel microphones permit you to move about, but if yours is stationary, be careful to speak so that your voice is directed toward the microphone.
- Interact with your visual aids. When a slide is up, use a pointer to point out what you want your audience to look at.
- Interpret your pictures. For each graphic exhibit, explain to your audience why you are showing it to them, what is noteworthy and what the "take-away" ideas are. Slow down to explain and get the most out of your graphic.
- Never back up to a previous slide. It will only take extra time and is likely to confuse the audience.
- And, finally, do not forget to retrieve your slides.
